Alan M. Gruenberg, M.D. is currently Professor, Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior, Sidney Kimmel Medical College, Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA and President, Gruenberg & Summers, P.C. Dr. Gruenberg was formerly Director, Dave Garroway Laboratory for the Study of Depression, at Pennsylvania Hospital and Senior Attending Psychiatrist at the Institute of Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia. He founded the Evaluation Unit, a specialized neuropsychiatric evaluation program, at the Institute of Pennsylvania Hospital, and was a Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University Of Pennsylvania School Of Medicine. Before coming to Philadelphia, Dr. Gruenberg was Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the Yale University School of Medicine, Assistant Director, Hill West Haven Inpatient Services at the Connecticut Mental Health Center, and later, Director of Admissions and Evaluation Services at the Yale Psychiatric Institute. 

Dr. Gruenberg received his undergraduate degree in history from the University Of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He completed his medical degree at the University Of Tennessee College Of Medicine in Memphis, Tennessee. He served his medical internship and residency in psychiatry at the Yale University School of Medicine, in the Department of Psychiatry at Yale New Haven Hospital in New Haven, Connecticut. He completed psychoanalytic training at the Philadelphia Psychoanalytic Institute in Philadelphia, PA.

Dr. Gruenberg has maintained a longstanding commitment to careful nosologic understanding of psychiatric disorders. As a resident and junior faculty member, he undertook with Kenneth Kendler, M.D., the reanalysis of the Danish Adoption Study of Schizophrenia, using proposed DSM-III criteria for diagnosis. He completed a reanalysis of the Iowa 500 and non-500 longitudinal and family study of major psychiatric disorders. He served as the diagnostic consultant to the Roscommon Family Study, which examined family aggregation and genetic markers of schizophrenia and other psychiatric disorders in western Ireland. He has also served as the diagnostic consultant to NIMH-sponsored longitudinal studies of cyclothymic and bipolar disorder in adolescents and young adults.

Dr. Gruenberg served as a member of the multiaxial work group for DSM-IV. He was responsible for the text revision for the chapter on multiaxial issues in DSM-IV-TR. He has contributed chapters on Axis III to the textbook, DSM-IV Sourcebook, Volume 3, and a proposal for multiaxial assessment to the volume, Advancing DSM: Dilemmas in Psychiatric Diagnosis. 

Dr. Gruenberg wrote the chapter on depressive disorders for the Tasman, Kay, Lieberman textbook, Psychiatry, first and second editions. He has also published articles on the integration of psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy in treatment of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder and has outlined approaches to pharmacological impasses in treatment. He has completed more than ten book reviews for Psychological Medicine.

Dr. Gruenberg is currently a member of the American College of Psychiatrists, Society for Biological Psychiatry, the Chair, History and Psychiatry Committee, Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry, and a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. He has been named among “Best Doctors in America” and recognized as one of “America’s Top Psychiatrists” by the Consumers’ Research Council of America.
