Neck Lift

The skin on the neck tends to age faster than the skin on the face. Fat deposits and gravity take their toll and cause the skin to sag. This can result in a double chin, “turkey neck”, jowls, or other imperfections that make one look older than they feel. While many people opt for face lifts when trying to restore a youthful appearance, neck lifts can often provide dramatic results. Treatments for problem areas on the neck and jawline are very effective, and they can make patients look years younger.

In general, neck lift procedures work by removing excess skin from the neck and jawline. The muscle in the neck may also be tightened if it has begun to sag or separate. The exact procedure varies from patient to patient depending upon his or her wants and expectations. In many cases, liposuction is performed in addition to the neck lift to remove fatty deposits.

Neck Lift Procedures

Neck lifts are typically performed in a surgical center or hospital. The patient may be given general anesthesia or oral sedatives depending on the exact type of procedure being performed. Incisions are usually made under or behind the ear to reduce scarring. The skin is then loosened and repositioned. Any excess skin is removed prior to suturing. If the neck muscle is being adjusted, a small portion may be removed so the remaining muscle can be tightened and rearranged to improve the appearance of the neck and throat area. Once all the tissue has been adjusted as needed, the incisions are closed using glue or sutures. Compression dressings are applied to support the healing tissue during the recovery period.

Recovering From a Neck Lift

Patients can usually go home a few hours after having a neck lift. Recovery time varies, but patients should expect at least two weeks of downtime. During this time, pain, bruising, and swelling is common. It is important to get up and walk around while healing, but patients should avoid lifting, bending, and strenuous activities. Sutures are usually removed 7 to 10 days after the procedure, and the full results become apparent in the following weeks and months.

Most neck lift procedures heal properly and without any major complications. Like all surgeries, however, there are risks. Although rare, some patients may experience excessive pain, redness, or oozing of the incision. These signs are symptoms of infection, and immediate medical attention is required. Blood clots also occur rarely.
