Botox is a brand name of a type of injection that can be used to treat a number of problems. It is most commonly used in for cosmetic purposes, but it may also be used in treating conditions like excessive blinking and lazy eye. The botox procedure is very simple, and the results last up to 6 months. Because the treatment is simple, affordable, and poses very little risk of side effects, it has become a very popular cosmetic treatment.
Botox Treatment
Botox is actually a toxin that is produced by a type of bacteria known as Clostridium botulinum. In large concentrations, this is the same type of toxin that causes botulism, or food poisoning. One of the largest potential complications of botulism is paralysis. Scientists have found, however, that small amounts of this toxin can cause controlled weakening of the muscles that can be beneficial in reducing the appearance of wrinkles and facial creases. Unlike many other treatments, Botox effectively treats moderate to severe wrinkles as opposed to only treating fine lines.
When botox is injected directly into a muscle, the toxin in Botox blocks signals between the nerves and the muscle. As a result, the muscle is no longer able to contract. When the muscle is relaxed, wrinkles also relax and become drastically less noticeable. Botox injections take only a few minutes, and there is no need for anesthesia. The full effect from an injection will become apparent within 3 to 7 days, and the results generally last 4 to 6 months. When wrinkles return, they can be retreated. Over time, Botox injections can actually train the muscle to remain in a more relaxed state which results in less severe lines and wrinkles.
Recovery From Botox Treatment
Though the injection is made using a known toxin, the risk of side effects is low. Temporary bruising near the injection site is the most common. Some patients may also experience headaches or eyelid drooping, but such side effects are rare. They are more likely when the Botox moves around, so it is best to avoid laying down for 3 to 4 hours following an injection, and patients should avoid rubbing the area for at least 12 hours. In extreme cases, patients may experience flu-like symptoms, pain, or a weakness in the muscle that limits facial expressions. Because the procedure only requires injections using a small needle, patients are usually able to resume their regular daily activities immediately after a botox treatment.
